15,000 charity staff paid over £60,000 a year.  And my response is – “so what?” The Charity Commission says there are 180,000 registered charities in England and Wales. That means less than one in 10 have at least one person paid over £60K. Let’s get real – this is pretty much a starting salary in some industries, but the people getting this salary in charities will probably have 20+ years of experience. I find it hard to fathom why informed people who would not think twice about spouting the rationale for multi-million pound salaries to bankers “you need the talent, you need to compete” somehow think that does not apply in charities! Of course you need to pay for talent to get good, well run, efficient organisations. And really, charity salaries do not compare to, let us say, bankers, management consultants. I think the view is that we should all volunteer our time to charities – and so many of us do (alongside our jobs) – but we also need to live!
