The London Marathon wasn’t for me about the celebrities, but friends putting themselves through months of training and preparation, and not a little effort on the day, to raise money each for different charities: Anthony Nolan, Pancreatic Cancer UK, Mencap, VSO – because they care about the cause and the difference those charities will make with the money. And the daughter of one those friends commented “I want to support every charity I see a runner for” – and so many excellent causes were represented – it does make you realise again how important the third sector is to people’s lives. My other reflection is a more prosaic one – that even after so many years, the marathon runners still inspire me to donate – not always, perhaps not at the same level, but the credit card did come out again. It may be a mature product, but it is not quite the end of its life-cycle.
